[Chronicle from the past]
Armed with dozens of pails of water
In the 50s, the inhabitants of Bormio waited at night for the Liege Rome Liege competitors, armed with dozens of pails of water!
As soon as the cars arrived they threw the water on the wheels to cool the brakes, which were white hot from the terrible descent from the Stelvio pass. Thanks to their help, the competitors were able to set off again immediately for the Gavia pass.
The old people of the village remember these epic moments with emotion when the drivers were heroes and the cars were smoking meteors disappearing into the night with blazing lights, roaring engines and squealing tyres.
What a spectacle!

BORMIO - SAN MARTINO di Castrozza (Italy)
SAN MARTINO di Castrozza, at the foot of the famous Pale di San Martino, in the Cismon valley, is a small town surrounded by mountains: the Pale Di San Martino form a wild undulating massif with steep peaks: Cima della Vezzana, (3193m), Cimon della Pala (3185m).
The Catinaccio massif (3002m) takes on such a reddish hue at sunset that, according to legend, roses grew on its peaks. Unfortunately a jealous king changed these roses into stone. Now only the colour of the peaks remains at sunset and the German name for the peaks, the Rosengarten, the rose garden. This phenomenon of reddening at dawn and sunset is known throughout the Dolomites as Enrosadira.
At the centre of the Catinaccio massif, the Torri del Vaiolet or Violet Towers are spectacular straight needles of rock.
Arrival at San Martino will be by way of the Passo di Rolle (1970m), which links the Val Travignolo and the Cismon valley. The top of the Passo offers a staggering panorama. Everywhere, peaks reflected in the blue or green waters of the lakes; welcoming valleys.

SAN MARTINO di Castrozza - KRANJSKA GORA (Slovenia)
Slovenia: the sunny side of the Alps
When the spring sunshine begins to wipe away the last traces of snow, all the valleys become green, and lovers of nature and the countryside can again roam these bright unspoilt terrains that are to be found all over Slovenia.
Slovenians are proud of the beauties hidden in this green heart of Europe. The Slovenes open their doors and gladly share the natural treasures of their country with nature lovers and those who are seeking a breath of fresh air a few hours from London or Paris, with whoever appreciates a change of surroundings as they go from mountain peaks in the morning to sunset on the Adriatic, after passing through forests.
So welcome to the sunny side of the Alps.

KRANJSKA GORA - PORTOROSE (Slovenia)
Portorose.
A long promenade full of flowers follows the curve of the Adriatic. Beach lovers find happiness there, others prefer to explore the surrounding area with the mediaeval town of Piran, the world renowned Lipica stud farms or the unique caves of the karstic sub soil. In the quiet of the evening, Portorose is ideal for enjoying the charm of the Mediterranean Riviera on the terrace of a typical café.

All the way with the Police
For two days, relations have been formed between the competitors and the highway police (Polizia Stradale). As they left the Grossetto rostrum, several competitors followed their favourite motorcycle policeman to go back to the hotel until they found themselves in front of the police service station.
